After the magnitude 6.3 earthquake that devastated Christchurch in February 2011, the city began a long process of physical and emotional recovery. Seven years on, Riverside Market and Riverside Lanes opened as a seven-day indoor farmers’ market showcasing local produce alongside a curated boutique retail experience — a successor in spirit to the earlier Re:Start container mall.
Situated on the Avon River, the central development was designed by Kirk Roberts Consulting for Mainland Capital and delivered by Consortium Construction. The $80 million project has become a daily focal point for the city — averaging more than 10,000 visitors a day — and won the NZ Property Council’s Yardi Retail Property Award in 2020.
Riverside Market is now an iconic meeting place for residents and visitors alike, playing a vital role in Christchurch’s renewal.
For high traffic venues, selecting durable materials that endure prolonged use while retaining their appearance is essential. When combined with the strict compliance requirements of public spaces, it’s vital to specify products from experienced, well supported manufacturers whose international track record ensures performance, warranty and ongoing service.

Legge 700 Series in Oil Rubbed Bronze (ORB) and the Legge 6000 Series in Satin Brass (SBU), with Schlage stainless steel pull handles, complemented this diverse project beautifully — their special finishes provided a cohesive, high-end look while meeting the durability and compliance demands of a busy public venue.
The only exception is in the form of the Briton exit devices. The colour contrast between door furniture and door ensures compliance with BCA requirements on accessibility and access routes – crucial to ensuring safety of the building occupants.
