It’s not often that a client has a vision for the kind of project that kids dream about and adults covet. Set among mature redwoods in the Waikato, the 14.5 m–high Treehouse responds to its site with a bold structural and architectural gesture.
The combination of technical innovation, materiality and finish was recognised at the Master Joiners 2025 awards, where the project took the Supreme Award as well as Best Creative Use of Timber and Best Timber Project. The Treehouse is a clear example of collaborative craftsmanship translating a distinctive client vision into an exceptional built outcome.
The year-long project was both physically and technically demanding. A four-ton main platform is suspended seven metres above ground around a cylindrical steel trunk; the platform is enclosed by sixteen cedar shutters arranged at staggered heights from 2.2 m to 4 m, creating a textural and protected exterior. The interior includes a faceted bar and a concealed WC, demonstrating the level of detail throughout the build. Many of these components were fabricated by Wackrows Joinery to fit out the finished structure.

Installing solid timber shutters of varying heights—secured with faceted jambs—over two stories above ground presented significant challenges.
Liam Wackrows reflected “Transporting the custom bar cabinetry and bi-fold doors up the spiral staircase, followed by a complex installation process at height, was a key challenge.” This demanding work required careful planning, precision craftsmanship, and close coordination to ensure safety and quality throughout the elevated installation.
The team selected Brio hardware to fasten the shutters with both security and elegance. Brio’s range translates design intent into practical, reliable solutions—whether opening living spaces to sweeping views or creating adaptable work areas in classrooms and offices—and proved an ideal complement to the Treehouse’s extraordinary design.
